What Memorial Day Means To Me (And How I Celebrated With My Family)

As most of you know, Memorial day is a special day every year during the last Monday in May where the United States honors and remembers everyone who has died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

I cherish Memorial Day every year with my family. It’s a Monday that we get to spend together and do something fun. Both my husband and I work full-time so we typically do not get Mondays off.

I know that freedom isn’t free. The safety my family feels when going on outings together does come at a price. Men and women who have fought and died for our country need to be honored and remembered.

Happy Memorial Day 2019

This year I will be spending Memorial Day as I do every year, with family. I will not take this time with my family for granted.

So whether you are out shopping with your family this year, or at the lake, or just on your couch having a movie day, today is the day to remember that the freedoms you have as an American citizen come at a price.

There was blood shed for your freedom to choose what you wanted to do today. There will be continued blood shed so we can remain free.

Celebrating Memorial Day as a family

So as I venture with my family today as we enjoy our time together, I will remember the sacrifices made for our freedom and safety. I will also share (as I do every year) the meaning of Memorial Day to my son.

As kids are the future of our country, we need to teach them the importance of Memorial Day as it seems to be a trend in the past fifty years for citizens to disrespect the very people who fight for their safety.

Memorial Day Videos For Kids

This year, I shared this video with my five-year-old. Since his preschool year had already ended (therefore he doesn’t learn about Memorial Day in school) I thought this video was a good one for his age.

We also colored a flag coloring sheet and talked about Memorial Day after.

Memorial Day Quotes

I’d like to close this article by sharing some good Memorial Day quotes. Quotes have always inspired me and there are some amazing quotes about Memorial Day and those who have fallen while defending our great country.

  • “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God such men lived.”- George S. Patton
  • The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” -Jeff Miller
  • “I believe our flag is more than just cloth and ink. It is a universally recognized symbol that stands for liberty, and freedom. It is the history of our nation, and it’s marked by the blood of those who died defending it.”- John Thune
