The Secret To Happiness Is Not What You Think

Estimated Reading Time: 13 Minutes

Being humble, generous and forgiving will actually make your life much more enjoyable. Here’s why:

Why Being Humble Is Important

It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels. -Saint Augustine

Most of us know a person in our lives that loves to give more than receive, forgives often and apologizes frequently. This person is an amazing person inside and out and an example of true Christian values.

They are also the mediators in any tough situation that they become a part of. (Even if it has nothing to do with them.)

She (or he) will be the one that helps solve tough situations. They are people pleasers with big, caring hearts.

Here’s what makes these people truly humble; they want to please people not because it makes them look good but because they genuinely care. They don’t brag about their acts of kindness or their forgiving nature. They are authentic in their capacity to desire happiness for other people with no ulterior motive in mind.

Why Everyone Loves A Humble Person

You really have upset a humble person for them to become defensive towards you. They may bring up some good points in a calm manner and share their opinion, but they will never raise their voice unless they are extremely upset.

I wish I was less stubborn because I am always inspired by those who are humble. Living in a culture that glorifies aggressive behaviors, humble people are a rare breed.

There is one humble person in our family.  I’d say the she is the one that worries the most and holds the family together. She’s also taken advantage of more than anyone else in the family.

However, everyone really admires this person. She smooths out the rough edges in our family and calms the waters. She gave me so much Christian parenting advice that I use towards my son now. Her Christian values really show through.

Being Humble- We All Secretly Wish That We Were Truly Humble

This person is my mom. She’s helped people her whole life.

Our entire family. She also has worked as a nurses aid at a nursing home for over thirty years.

My mom is smarter than she lets on. Yes, people take advantage of her but only because she allows it to happen. That may sound weak to some people but she knows at the end of the day that shes not going to let anger destroy her, because when you are angry and don’t forgive you are the one who isn’t free, not the person that you are angry at.

It makes me feel mad when people take advantage of her, even though I do myself sometimes.

At the end of the day, we all take advantage of people if we can.

Doesn’t matter who we are. Human beings are really selfish in nature. Except those who are truly humble.

Although truly humble people care about their happiness they tend to put other peoples happiness before their own. They are people to be admired.

Why Is Being Truly Sorry Or Forgiving Easily A Sign Of Weakness?

According to our culture admitting ones own faults or forgiving someone quickly is truly weak.

We see stories of revenge on our Television sets.  Almost every American television series has had at least one of their main characters create and execute an elaborate revenge plot.

We all see humans degrading each other because of their pride. Housewives that are so stubborn that they degrade each other instead of admitting that they are not perfect.

Aggression Is A sign Of Strength In American Culture

However, most of us know that it takes a great deal of strength to apologize and be kind to everyone. It also takes someone intelligent to forgive. To be slow to anger is not easy for anyone.

Most of us are prisoners to anger, guilt, resentment and pride by not forgiving those who have wronged us and by not admitting to our own misdeeds.

I love the song “Forgiveness” by Matthew West. Especially this part.

“It’ll clear the bitterness away
It can even set a prisoner free
There is no end to what its power can do
So, let it go and be amazed
By what you see through eyes of grace
The prisoner that it really frees is you”

Once you forgive someone, you are the one set free. And once someone is truly sorry for their sins and works to change themselves, the guilt starts drifting away.

How Can One Be Truly Sorry When They Have Too Much Pride In Themselves?

The word sorry doesn’t even mean much anymore.

We say sorry when we bump into someone at the grocery store. Or when we really aren’t sorry but just want to move past the confrontation.

Sorry is a word that has lost it’s meaning. It’s like how our culture views the word “love”. “I Love Chocolate”, “I Love My Ex’s Car”!

I’ve thrown the words love and sorry around like confetti as well. I realize how poor my choice in words are at times.

Saying Sorry Shouldn’t Be Meaningless

Apologizing should mean something. Being sorry is truly regretting something and learning from your mistakes. I’ve started myself to say “I apologize” as a way to really express that feel bad for my actions. Saying sorry doesn’t seem to hold any leverage anymore.

Being humble is seeing how you could have made a mistake in any situation.

Even if what you did was so minor compared to the person one screaming in your face. They have to live with their actions as well.

Even if you raised your voice and said something mean when they already said twenty mean things to you, don’t allow their transgressions to have a negative effect on you.

What It Means To Be Humble

Humble people are the most intelligent people on this Earth. They recognize that they are not perfect and are always making mistakes. They see the error of their ways even when people around them are sinning more frequently.

They don’t let other people’s sin’s get in the way of seeing their own sin.

That’s the important part here.

They are the freest humans on Earth. They choose not to be bound by their sin or the sins of others. Which is more counter-cultural than any of us realize.

What Our Culture Thinks Is Weak Is Not What God Thinks Is Weak

how God defines strength

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever”       -1 John 2:15-17

Pride, Lust, Stubbornness, Greed, Gluttony, Human Emotions Such As These Are Sinful

Although we can’t completely avoid them, we have to fight them to the best of our ability. (Let me remind you that lust is misplaced desire, marriage is beautiful and having relations with your spouse isn’t sinful.)

I find myself sinning all of the time.

In this culture that teaches everything that Jesus does not, it’s hard to not live in the world.

  • Cheating on one’s spouse and divorce has now become glamorous. And although divorce is sometimes necessary, it should never be celebrated.
  • Pride is considered a strength.
  • Greed is good.
  • Being selfish is normal.

But the one person I see in my life that puts others before herself inspires me to work harder.

I don’t feel like I’m close to her level but I’m working at it everyday. And I know she’s not perfect but I believe that shes more spiritually intelligent than I currently am.

At the end of the day it’s not just about devoting your time to learning and studying about God, it’s not all about learning the word. Some of the biggest Christian hypocrites are the ones that throw how much they know about scripture in everyone’s face.

The most important thing is living in the word. Being kind to others. Trying to live like Jesus did.

You Don’t Have To Be Perfect

Isn’t it good to know that God forgives us? But we have to make a conscious effort to work toward him, and to not be of the world.

I heard the closer you get to God, the easier it gets. I’ve experienced that myself but I still have a long ways to go.

Praise God for loving us the way that he does.
